You can download two Gilroy weights, Light and ExtraBold, for free and legally from the designer’s own website, and you can use them in commercial work and on websites. The other 18 styles of the family are paid: from $25 per style, or $180 for the complete family on MyFonts (checked 17 October 2026).
Most results for “Gilroy free download” are copy-paste pages offering the full family, which was never released for free. Here is the official download, what is inside it, and what you are allowed to do with it.

Where to download Gilroy for free (official)
The only official free source is the designer’s site, tinkov.info/gilroy.html. Gilroy was designed by Radomir Tinkov, a Bulgarian type designer, and released in 2016.
- Click Download Gilroy Free above. The ZIP comes straight from the designer’s own server,
tinkov.info/downloads/Gilroy-FREE.zip; FontCompass does not host it. - Prefer to go through the designer’s page? Open tinkov.info/gilroy.html and click Download 2 for FREE. A newsletter box may appear; you can close it.
- Either way you get
Gilroy-FREE.zip(815 KB). Unzip it before installing.
What is inside the ZIP, as we downloaded it on 17 October 2026:
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
Gilroy-Light.otf |
Light weight, upright only |
Gilroy-ExtraBold.otf |
ExtraBold weight, upright only |
Radomir Tinkov Free Font EULA .pdf |
The license, one page, dated March 23, 2018 |
These are complete fonts, not cut-down demos. Each free file maps 466 characters: 288 Latin characters including accented letters for most European languages, 94 Cyrillic characters, plus ligatures and fractions. Full Vietnamese is not supported.
You also get a __MACOSX folder and a .DS_Store file. These are left over from the Mac the ZIP was made on, and you can delete them.

Not in the free download: italics, and every other weight, including Regular, Medium and Bold. A site offering a “Gilroy font family free download” with all 20 styles is distributing files that were not released for free. Those files are unlicensed, and you have no way of knowing whether they were modified.
Can you use the free Gilroy commercially? Yes
Many download sites, and some AI search summaries, say the free weights are for personal use or a trial only. The license inside the official ZIP says otherwise. Its first clause:
“Download, install and use the Font solely for your personal and commercial purposes strictly in accordance with the terms of this Agreement.”
And on websites:
“You may generate web font formats from the Font and use the generated Font on websites via @font-face.”
What the free license allows, in plain terms
| Use | Free Light / ExtraBold |
|---|---|
| Personal and commercial projects | Allowed |
| Logos, print, packaging, social graphics, physical products (fixed-size or static vector) | Allowed |
Websites, using web fonts you generate yourself via @font-face |
Allowed, with no pageview limit stated |
| Sharing, selling or redistributing the font files (including inside templates you sell) | Not allowed |
| Modifying the font or making derivative fonts | Not allowed without written consent |
| Embedding in a mobile app, an e-book or a server-side tool | Not mentioned, so not granted |
The website clause is the part most people miss. If your site only needs Light and ExtraBold, the free license already covers web use. You do not need a paid webfont license for those two weights.

The redistribution clause matters if you sell Canva, Figma or Photoshop templates. You can design with the free weights, but you cannot ship the font files to buyers. They need to download Gilroy themselves.
We are not lawyers. If a project depends on it, read the EULA in the ZIP yourself, or contact the designer.
What the paid weights cost
Tinkov’s “Buy” button points to MyFonts. These are MyFonts prices in USD, checked 17 October 2026:
| License | One style | Complete family (20 styles) |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop, 1 user | $25 | $180 |
| Desktop, 5 users | $90 | $648 |
| Company Desktop, up to 20 employees | $46.88 | $337.50 |
| Webfonts, 10,000 pageviews/month | $25 | $180 |
| Webfonts, 100,000 pageviews/month | $96.88 | $697.50 |
| Electronic Doc (e-book, PDF), 1 title | $50 | $360 |
| Digital Ad / Email, 1,000,000 impressions | $25 | $180 |
| App, 1 title for one year | $375 | $2,700 |
| Server, 1 CPU core | $250 | $1,800 |
Where else? Fontspring has Gilroy pages, but its Light page currently says the product is not available there, and we could not confirm current Fontspring pricing. TypeType ranks for “Gilroy” too, but its Gilroy page sells TypeType’s own families (TT Norms Pro, TT Commons Pro and others) as look-alikes, not Gilroy itself. A TypeType license does not give you rights to Gilroy.
MyFonts also sells Light and ExtraBold at the same $25 per style. You would buy those only if you need a use the free EULA does not cover, such as an app or an e-book.
Single styles or the family?
At $25 per style against $180 for the family, the family is cheaper once you need 8 or more styles (8 × $25 = $200). Most brand systems use three or four: for example Regular, Medium and Bold, plus the free ExtraBold for headlines. That comes to $75 for a desktop license, not $180.
Which license do you need?
- A logo or print work in Light or ExtraBold: nothing to buy. The free EULA covers it.
- A logo or print work in other weights: a Desktop license for each computer that will have the font installed.
- A website: free for Light and ExtraBold. For other weights, a Webfonts license sized to your monthly pageviews.
- A PDF or e-book with the font embedded: an Electronic Doc license per title.
- A mobile app: an App license. The free EULA does not cover apps, even for the free weights.
- Templates you sell: you cannot include the font files under either license. Point buyers to the free download or to MyFonts.
Free alternatives, compared side by side
If you need weights that are not free and the budget is zero, the two usual suggestions are Poppins and Montserrat, both on Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License (free for commercial use). We set the same text in all three:

What we measured from the font files:
- Width: the word “Branding” is 13% wider in Poppins and 15% wider in Montserrat than in Gilroy ExtraBold. Across a full sentence, the gap is smaller but still clear: about 10% and 11%. If you swap fonts in an existing layout, expect headlines to wrap differently.
- Lowercase height: Gilroy’s lowercase is relatively short (x-height 0.71 of the cap height, against 0.80 for Poppins and 0.77 for Montserrat). Poppins in particular will look bigger and rounder at the same point size.
Our take: Poppins is closer in overall mood, Montserrat is wider and more formal. If you only need a light and a heavy weight, though, you don’t need an alternative at all. The free Gilroy Light and ExtraBold are the real thing.
Quick answers
Is Gilroy on Google Fonts? No. Gilroy is a commercial family. Only Light and ExtraBold are free, and only from the designer’s own site.
Is there a free Gilroy Regular or Bold? No. If you need those, either buy single styles ($25 each) or use one of the free alternatives above.
Can I install the free Gilroy on Windows and Mac? Yes. The files are standard OpenType (.otf). Double-click a file and choose Install.
Are “Gilroy full family free download” sites legitimate? No. The designer releases two weights for free. Full-family ZIPs on download sites are not licensed.
Do I need to credit the designer for the free weights? The free EULA does not require attribution.
Can I use the free weights for a client’s logo? Yes, the license allows commercial use. Do not hand the font files to the client, though. They can download them from tinkov.info themselves.
