You can download Qanelas Thin and Qanelas Black for free from the designer’s own website and use them in personal and commercial work, including websites. There is one catch nobody mentions: the free files have word spaces about twice as wide as normal, which matters for anything longer than a single word. The other 18 styles cost $29 each on MyFonts, or $190 for the family (checked 17 October 2026).

Where to download Qanelas for free (official)
Qanelas is designed by Radomir Tinkov, the Bulgarian type designer behind Gilroy. The free ZIP is hosted on his site, tinkov.info/qanelas.html; the button above downloads it directly from there.

The catch: extra-wide word spaces
The files are named “DEMO”, but they are not cut down in characters: each has 468 characters, including accented Latin and Cyrillic, plus kerning and OpenType features. What is different is the space character. We measured it in the font files:
- Qanelas Thin (free): 0.55 em
- Qanelas Black (free): 0.57 em
- For comparison, the free Gilroy weights from the same designer: 0.25 to 0.27 em
That gap is visible in the image above. For a one-word logo it does not matter. For a headline or a name of two or more words, either reduce the word spacing (InDesign and CSS both allow this), set the words as separate text objects, or buy the paid weights, which have normal spacing.
What the free license allows
The ZIP contains the same one-page Radomir Tinkov Free Font End User License Agreement (version dated March 23, 2018) that ships with the free Gilroy weights. The file is byte-for-byte identical. Its first clause allows use “solely for your personal and commercial purposes”, and a later clause allows web fonts generated from the files via @font-face.
| Use | Free styles |
|---|---|
| Personal and commercial projects, print, logos, products | Allowed |
Websites via @font-face |
Allowed, no pageview limit stated |
| Sharing, selling or bundling the font files | Not allowed |
| Modifying the font files | Not allowed without written consent |
| Apps, e-books, servers | Not mentioned, so not granted |
Because the license allows web use, you can use the free weights on a website. If the wide spaces bother you there, CSS word-spacing with a negative value (around -0.3em) brings them close to normal.
We walk through each clause in our Gilroy free download guide, which uses the same license.
What the paid styles cost
The family has 20 styles: ten weights from Thin to Black, each with an italic. MyFonts sells them individually, in two-weight sets and as a family. Prices in USD, checked 17 October 2026:
| License | One style | Complete family (20 styles) |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop, 1 user | $29 | $190 |
| Desktop, 5 users | $104.40 | $684 |
| Company Desktop, up to 20 employees | $54.38 | $356.25 |
| Webfonts, 10,000 pageviews/month | $29 | $190 |
| Webfonts, 100,000 pageviews/month | $112.38 | $736.25 |
| Electronic Doc (e-book, PDF), 1 title | $58 | $380 |
| Digital Ad / Email, 1,000,000 impressions | $29 | $190 |
| App, 1 title | $435 | $2,850 |
| Server, 1 CPU core | $290 | $1,900 |
Other packages: one weight with its italic is $38, two weights with their italics are $76, all ten uprights are $130, all ten italics are $130, and the full family is $190. If you need more than six single styles, the family is the better deal.
Free alternatives, compared

- Poppins ExtraBold and Montserrat Bold (Google Fonts, SIL Open Font License) are the usual free suggestions, but both run wide: 17% and 19% wider than Qanelas Black on the word “Branding”.
- If the compact, geometric look is what you want, the free Qanelas weights, or Gilroy’s free Light and ExtraBold from the same designer, are closer than either Google Font.
Quick answers
Is Qanelas free for commercial use? Thin and Black are, including on websites. The other weights are paid.
Why are the free files called DEMO? They have the full character set, but the word space is about twice the normal width, which limits them for running text.
How is Qanelas related to Gilroy? Same designer; MyFonts describes Gilroy as the “brother” of the original Qanelas.
